Lillian Michelson

My Comment – 50 years! Wow! Who would have thought 50 years ago, life would have taken me on such a journey! I have had incredible joys and devastating heartbreaks. I had 25 years of a fairytale life with my husband and 3 precious children. And then in 1992, my world collapsed when my first child, Michelle, lost her life in a car accident in Arizona where she was attending U of A. Her death dramatically changed my life. A dream visitation from Michelle inspired COPE, an acronym for Connecting Our Paths Eternally, a grief and healing organization dedicated to helping families living with the loss of a child - www.copefoundation.org. I am the visionary and President of this non-profit foundation I founded in 1999, in Michelle's memory. COPE offers support groups and integrative healing programs across Long Island for parents and siblings. In the year 2000, my husband Robert passed suddenly from a heart attack on the same date in January that my daughter passed 8 years before. As a result of his passing, COPE expanded its support to children. Every August, at Camp Wayne, COPE offers a free weekend bereavement camp for children 6-17 who are grieving a parent, sibling or someone close to them, with a concurrent parent retreat. My children, Spencer and Greer, are an integral part of Camp Erin NYC with their spouses, giving back from their own deep experience of loss. Today, I am very blessed to have tremendous joy in my life. I have the most extraordinary children who have given me the most wonderful daughter-in-law, Dana and son-in-law, Billy, and 4 magnificent grandchildren, Maya, Brady, Mason and Skylar, all named for Michelle and and my husband. I found another great love and life partner, Jerry Weinstock, my creative counter part who is a writer. And myself, an artist---a career of fine art I've enjoyed since the 70's. Life is good. Out of the darkness I was fortunate to find light and great purpose to transform my pain. Grade School, Jr High, and High School were another life time. I look forward to revisiting all the memories of a time of innocence, fun, and laughter, with all my friends and classmates celebating our 50th!
